HOW UGANDAN POLITICIANS BECOME POPULAR

 By Matata Mercy

One time while having an intimate conversation with some of  my friends, one close friend of mine asked me a thought provoking question, he said, How do Ugandan politicians become popular?

I frankly told him that I did not have any idea about that.

Then he lectured me about how to gain popularity as a politician.

Today, I would like to share with you a few tips on how to become a very popular politician in Uganda.

1.Corrupt politicians.

It is a very sad episode that in Uganda, that the people who are corrupt are the ones who are praised and adored.

Recently when the iron sheet scandal took off with the political figures within the Prime minister's office under fire.

Many Ugandans out there were praising some of these people as their heroes.

One of the Ministers used the iron sheet to roof his shelter for rearing goats while  others used these iron sheets which were meant for the people of Karamoja as donations to schools, churches and even to some of their voters.

I know some of the people who benefited from the iron sheets had no idea that it was supposed to be donated to some underpreviledged Ugandans.

And therefore, that would just be a reason enough for them not to accept those gifts disguised as iron sheets.

Not accepting those iron sheets would only be possible if they were true to their integrity.

2.Bribing voters.

Another way that politicians become popular is through the act of bribery.

In Uganda, when you want to win elections one of the easiest ways is through handing out cash to the voters so that they can remember you at the ballot box.

Just handing out 1000 shillings note to voters will give the politician the votes that he wants.

The politician who bribes voters will eventually become popular with the crowd and later on win the elections.

3.Rallying against the ruling party.

Truth betold, one of the ways of getting popularity when you are into politics in Uganda is to just join the opposition political party.

One reason why Dr. Kizza Besigye had a lot of followers was because he was one of the people to outright come out and condemn some of the bad policies done by the NRM party.

And now recently, Kyagulanyi Sentaamu with his National Unity Platform party that has gained a lot of popularity countrywide because Ugandans desperately want change.

And are willing to rally after any sane politician who is willing to take the mantle and run with it.

What else do you think makes politicians popular in Uganda?

Good luck 🫡🫡🤟🤟🍀
