SURVIVING WITHOUT A DEGREE

  By Matata Mercy

When i was still young, i was told that education is everything, go  to school, study hard and get a high paying job and you will get all that you desire in this world.

By saying all that you desire it was interpreted as  having a nice house, buying a nice car and getting a high paying job to finance your lifestyle.

After spending years in school  and finally getting out of school and having grown up already, i have learnt that  success in life is not about the degrees and the diploma qualifications that we do posses but it is more about a personal initiative and not the qualifications that we do have.

Since we have been schooled to believe that you can only succeed in life if you do have a degree or a diploma, that is what everybody has been focusing on.

Many have followed the path that they have been deceived to follow, they have read the books and burnt the midnight oil, others have placed their feet in cold water just to stay awake so that they can read properly without any interruptions from sleep.

Getting the best grades is the ticket to success that is what we have been told from time memorial. Many passed the exams and managed to graduate successfully.

Others were lucky enough to get the high paying jobs while others could not.

On the other side of the coin, there are those who did not perform well in school or simply were not motivated enough to complete school and therefore decided to drop out of school and follow their passions.

We now know  of very many of these people who came out of no where and succeeded  without following the path that everyone was supposed to follow. You have heard of Mark Zuckerberg, if you do not know him, he is the guy behind Facebook.

Zuckerberg dropped out of University to start the company which is now used by people all over the world.

There are a number of others like Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison and many others out there.

One thing that separates the dropouts who succeed and the dropouts who do not succeed is the fact that the ones who succeed keep learning and taking action towards achieving their goals and dreams. Is it possible to succeed without having a degree or diploma, yes it is.

Succeeding without a degree means taking charge of your life and embracing your own path. You embrace your own path by following your passions and doing the things that make you happy.

Instead of concentrating of passing exams in order to get good grades, you focus your attention towards doing the things that you love.

If you love and enjoy music, you focus your attention on composing and recording music  and promoting your music so that others can also listen to it and enjoy it.

In this digital age, it is now easy for us to learn new things from online platforms like YouTube, blogs and many other learning platforms out there.

It just takes some form of perseverance and concentration and desire to learn, you will  learn whatever you want to learn and then start practicing your craft or art  until you become very good at it.

When you become very good at your art or craft, then you can look for a way to monetize it.

For example if you have been composing songs and recording those songs and sharing them with others on social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter or even YouTube.

You will in the long run get a following in form of fans who love your work. Some of these fans and followers will start paying you some money for the work you have done.

You might for example be invited to perform at birthday parties or weddings and will be paid some money. Yes, you do not have a degree but are earning money from your talent or gift of singing.

You can succeed with a degree but you can also succeed without a degree it is just a matter of choice.

Choose to do the things that will make your life better, get marketable skills, network with others who can add value to you and seek for opportunities out there.

You will certainly succeed without a degree. Good luck to you.
