HOW NOT TO CHOOSE OUR LEADERS

By Matata Mercy

To be led by a fool is to be led by  the opportunists who control the fool.

What criteria do you use when choosing your leaders? Most people choose their leaders through a democratic system called voting.

Kim Jong-un - Wikipedia

People have the ability to elect their leaders and when these leaders are not doing the things that they ought to do, they are kicked out of the office through the same process.

But still democracy has it's weaknesses and it cannot be fully the only way in which a person can be able to choose the most reliable leader.

What issues do people take into consideration when choosing their leaders? In Africa, most people are looking for survival and a piece of soap or a kilogram of sugar can gaurantee votes for a candidate seeking leadership.

This simply means that we can end up with bad leaders in office if we decide to choose people who can offer us some gifts.

One poet called Octavia Butler offered us some guidance on how not to choose our leaders. She wrote the following:-

Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought.

To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears.

To be led by a fool is to be led by  the opportunists who control the fool.

To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen.

To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies.

To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.

The most fundamental question is how do you want to be led? You will need to apply knowledge and wisdom in order to choose the right leaders.

Our leaders determine our destiny, seek leaders who encourage and motivate us to achieve the best in life.
