IS LOCKDOWN A SOLUTION?

By Matata Mercy

I know by now that you know what a lockdown actually means and implies, if you do not know what a lockdown is then you must have been living on another planet in the past few months when the whole world was literally almost locked up.

Zimbabwe extends COVID-19 lockdown for another 14 days

For the case of Uganda, when a locked down was imposed by President Yoweri Museveni, it was a shock to many Ugandans out there who had to leave their jobs and stay home all day without a penny in their pockets.

That was when the reality hit us how fragile the state we believe we are in are. The talk about the distribution of food started taking shape and the so called Urban poor were to receive some posho and beans to help them feed their empty stomachs during the lockdown period.

Something we thought would last for a few weeks, suddenly turned into months and we became impatient and wanted to get out there.

To make things worse, not all people were in position to get the food supplies promised and even then the quality of the foods distributed was also questionable.

The beans looked like they had been picked out of a den of bean weavils while the posho couldn't even last for all those months.

They say a beggar has no choice but sometimes giving beggars things that are worth to be eaten by pigs is actually an insult in itself rather a matter of choice.

With no source of income, many people were left with lamenting and nothing else to do. In first world countries, handouts in form of cash was given to their citizens and this seemed to be some form of relief for sometime but then things took another turn and direction.

People got tired of staying  in their confinements, read homes, putting on masks became a burden to some who claimed they could not breath properly when they wore masks.

When you are in a situation where you are bound to lose your life and you are told to follow certain standard operating procedures, what would you rather choose to do? It is a matter of choice between life and death.

Would you rather die of hunger or the pandemic? Is lockdown a solution? I don't know.
