GROWING YOUR OWN FOOD

By Matata Mercy

Have you ever thought of the idea of growing your own food instead of spending money to buy food from the markets and other places like the supermarkets?

It is actually very possible for you to grow your own food in your own backyard just at home what some people have of late called Urban farming or Upscale farming.

Recently  i was watching  a documentary where there was a group of entrepreneurs in Finland that were growing foodstuffs in controlled environments at their homes. They were using green houses to grow crops like Cucumber and Cabbages.

One interesting thing that i saw was seeing nice looking mushrooms coming out of the bucket where they had been planted some months back.

It was an exciting sight and i thought if i could also one day be able to start growing my own food at my backyard, it would ultimately be great and interesting.

Now i know, you could be asking me how is that possible in the city where there are no gardens or farmlands? It is possible because you actually do not need alot of land to start off.

You could just even have one plant, may be a tomato that has been planted inside a sack that has been filled with soil.

That tomato seed wil germinate and you will be able to see some tomato fruits come out of it. In the end, you will atleast be able to eat your own tomato fruits from your own backyard. Is it possible to grow your own food? it is possible.

Get some empty buckets or large tins that are not being used and fill them with soil and then plant something inside there, it could just be some greens like Amaranthas commonly known as Dodo, Cabbages, buga or even the tomatoes.

Growing your own food and atleast to some extent will save you lots of money.

Like for example instead of buying tomatoes or cabbages from the market, you will just harvest them from your own backyard and you can use the money to invest in other things or just save it for future use.

If your urban farming venture takes off and does well, then you will be able to also sell off some of the foods that you have grown in your backyard to earn some money on the side.

I do believe that this is an idea which you should try out and see how it works. Iam in for growing my own food and may be one day you  will eat some tomatoes coming out of my backyard.
