DROPPING OUT OF COLLEGE, THE GOOD AND THE BAD

By Matata Mercy

When you tell your parents that you want to drop out of college and go pursue something else, how do you think they will react?

Most parents out there will advise to you stay in college and get your degree or diploma first. To  them, education is everything even if you are barely learning anything from the classroom.

They do believe that the piece of paper that you get out from that college is your salvation to a better and fulfilling life.

They forget to look around themselves to see how people who quit college some years back are now progressing in the careers that they have chosen to do.

People like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Micheal Dell and many others out there have managed to build a great career and future for themselves by following their own paths.

We cannot blame these parents because that is the path that they followed and led them to the kind of success that they have been able to achieve in their lives.

They would wish for their own kids to also get the taste of that success that they have been able to have.

But sadly, things have changed and we do have many graduates coming out of universities and colleges with degrees and diplomas  who are getting more and more frustrated post college. What is happening?

They are not getting what they thought they could get after college, the well paying jobs in nice offices. After spending over 20 years building a future that doesnot exist, the reality hits them like a brick was just thrown onto their heads.

They are bleeding in disbelief. Schools and Universities are preparing students for a future that doesnot actually exist. Many jobs of today will not be  available in the near future and what are unversities and Colleges doing about that. I do not know.

Dropping out of college means that you have the time to pursue the things that you want, if you are interested in becoming an entreprenuer you can start learning in the real world by actually selling something and making a profit off it than sitting in boring lecture rooms which are actually even more expensive in the long run.

If you are interested in music, just start recording songs and sharing those songs with people out there.

You will be able to get real feed back and then improve upon that.  Staying in college means that you are delaying yourself to get real world experience and also feedback.

There is a very big gap between College and the real world. College creates a sense of entittlement among it's graduates and this kills their motivation to work hard.

I think you have heard of a College graduate who refused to sell tomatoes on the street simply because he believes that he has a degree or a diploma.

Without a College degree or diploma, you have no sense of entittlement and can be able to start from anywhere.

On the other hand, if you drop out of College and are not taking action then you are in simple terms wasting your life.

I would advise all College drop outs to start doing something immediately after they have left  College. Start creating something, start working on individual projects, start a business, create art, start writing books, blogging and recording music.

Keep creating and sharing your work with people out there. You will get feedback and be able to improve your odds of success in the real world.

Without College, you can succeed.  Stop wasting your life, do something interesting and adventurous.  Life is short, do not waste  your time.
