HOW TO BUILD COURAGE

By Matata Mercy

Have you ever tried to do something but then something stops you from taking action and moving foward? If you have, you are not alone.

5 Ways to Cultivate Courage in Your Office | Fun Team Building

Many people have been stopped by fear from achieving the most interesting goals that they have set for themselves. Some people have failed to start up their own businesses but got stuck at jobs that they do not like with bosses who are always yelling at them.

Others have been married for years with partners who are rude to them and do not appreciate their love for them. What do all these people have in common?

All they do have in common is their lack of courage. What is courage and how can a human being gain the courage to overcome the obstacles that stand before him or her? Courage is the ability to keep moving foward inspite of fear.

The fear is present but a courageous person just keeps moving towards their own goals and dreams by taking the necessary actions required for him to achieve those goals.

So how can a human being be able to build courage so that they can be able to overcome the obstacles that stifle them from achieving the goals and dreams that they have always wanted to accomplish?

In my own opinion, there are two methods  which you can use to help you to build the courage that can help you move past your fears and towards your dreams.

1. The weight lifting analogy

If you have ever done weight lifting you know that the best way to build your muscles is to start with small weights that you can lift and then keep challenging yourself by increasing the size of the weights little by little.

For example you can start by lifting 10 kg weights and then you increase this amount to 12kg and then 14, 17, and 20 kg.

If you can be able to lift 99kg weights then it is very possible for you to lift 100kg easily than some one who has only lifted 20 kg.

So how does the weight analogy apply to building courage to face your fears?

If you are going to build courage using the weight analogy, then  you will need to learn to face your fears one at a time starting with the smallest possible fear that you can kick out of your way.

Start by listing down the fears that are stopping you from achieving your goals, then after you have listed them on a piece of paper, you can then face them one at a time.

For example if you would love to take a woman out on a date but you have been held back by fear, then start small.

You can start by walking into a public place and then start smiling at a stranger and when you are comfortable you could move on and start greeting women on the street by waving at them or saying a simple hi.

From there, you could take it further and start having long interesting conversations with women out there. Now that you have built the courage to talk to women, it will be easy for you to call up a woman and take her out for a date.

This weight lifting analogy works because you are able to monitor and see your progress each and every step of the way.

2. The research analogy

Another way for you to be able to overcome fear is to do research about the things that you are fearing and discover the solutions that you can apply to these fears.

If you are fearing that you lack the skills and knowledge to do something, then you can start facing your fears by beginning to learn those skills and gaining knowledge so that you are confident enough to perform those tasks that you want to accomplish.

For example if you get a job as a web developer but you are fearing to take the job because you lack the skills to build a website, the best thing to do is to learn how to build a website, start learning the scripting languages like HTML/CSS, Php, and Javascript.

As you keep learning and gaining knowledge about website development you will build the confidence and the courage to  take those jobs easily since you will not have any fear anymore.

Are you facing any fears in your life that are stopping you from living the best life that you can, then use the two above methods to build courage to help you overcome your fears and achieve the life that you desire.

You should not allow fear to become the victor of your life, confront your fears head on. You should allow yourself to die without experiencing an adventurous life.

You will fail, be embarrased, experience rejection and also end up in unfulfilled relationships. All these things are milestones that you will encounter along the path of living a courageous life.

These are your private victories which you should embrace.

Go forth and feel the fear, and summon the courage to follow your dreams. This is the strength that cannot be defeated.
