BIOGRAPHY OF SOMI, THE RWANDAN MUSIC ARTIST

 Laura Kabasomi Kakoma  who is popularly known as Somi is a Rwandan singer and actress who is currently living in the United States of America.



Somi was born on the 6th of June in the year 1981 in a place called Champaign which is found in the state of Illinois in the United States of America.

 She was born during the period when her father was in the process of completing his Phd programme at the University of Illinois which is found in Urbana-Champaign.



During the time when Somi was just at a tender age of three, her family decided to move to place called Ndola which is found in Zambia and her father was working for the World Health Organisation.

Her father later worked as a professor at the University of Illinois in the early 1980s and the family had to relocate to Champaign where Somi was able to spend the rest of her childhood period.

 Somi studied at University Labaratory highschool and also Champaign central high school.

She later proceeded to the University of Illinois found in Urbana Champaign where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Anthropology and African studies.

 Somi later enrolled for a Masters degree in Performance studies at New York University. Somi has been able to build a career that is based on original and hybrid sound that she has been able to call New african jazz.

 In the year 2007, she was able to lincense her album that was independently recorded to the Harmonia Mundi or World Village label  for her first international distribution label.

The record was able to reach the top ten songs on the United States World Music charts for very many months.

In the year 2009, Somi was able to sign a contract with another independent record label  which is called ObliqSound.

In the year 2013, Somi was able to be signed to her first major label which is called Sony Music and she became one of their first music artists on their historic jazz that was relaunched and it was imprinted as Okeh Records.

Somi is also the founder of an award winning non-profit organization which is called New Africa Live.

Somi is an inspiration to all the youths out there most especially the girls out there who would like to join the entertainment industry most especially the music industry.
