BIOGRAPHY OF ALSARAH, THE SUDANESE MUSIC ARTIST


Sarah Mohammed Abunama-Elgadi  who is popularly known as Alsarah is a Sudanese music artist, ethnomusicologist and also a songwriter who is the leader of the popular music group which is called Alsarah and Nubitones and has been able to perform with other groups like The Nile Project.

Alsarah was born in a place called Khartoum which is found in Sudan and her parents are human rights activists.

When she was eight years old, her family fled away from theit native country Sudan as a result of the civil war that brought Omar-el Bashir to power and sought an asylum in the United States and settled in Boston.

While she lived in Boston, she always found solace in music and was often engrossed in listening to bootleg  recordings while in Yemen  and she also did some casual piano lessons from a family friend.

When Alsarah lived in the United States, she join very many world choirs and was able to sing with them. She joined highschool and studied at a school called Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School.

She studied at the University called Wesleyan University and graduated with a degree in Ethnomusicology. Her thesis was focused on the Sudanese music which is called Zar music.

After completing her course, she decided to shift to New York city  and started doing music professionally in Arabic language and was supporting herself with odd jobs that she was doing at the time. She performed with the Zanzibari band doing the sound of Tarab music.

In the year 2010, she founded a music group called Asarah and the Nubatones with  a sister who is called Nahid.

 In the year 2014, the group released their debut album called Soukura Ep which was followed by the full-length of the album which is called Silt later that same year.

The song later had a music video which was released in the month of March.

 The group has been able to tour various countries as they performed in countries like Hungary,Arab Emirates, Egypt, Morroco,  Sweden, Lebanon,  and also Luthuiania.

Alsarah also featured in a documentary that was premiered back in the year 2014 called Beats of Antonov and it was able to win the People's choice Awards for the Best documentary in the year 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

Alsarah and her music group has been able to release songs like Slit,Manara, Soukura and others.

Alsarah is an inspiration to all the youths most especially the girls out there who are planning to join the music industry.
