CORONA AND THE UGANDAN FOOD POLITICS

By Matata Mercy

I once read something that said that if you want to know the true character of an  African man, then all you need to do is to put food infront of him and all those hidden characters and behaviours will come out flowing easily without being held back.

Uganda starts relief food distribution for vulnerable people amid ...

In times of crisis, one of the most valuable things that people will look for is food among shelter and security.

Seeing the Corona virus pandemic sweeping one country after the other, it seems like the whole world is panicking and at a stand still and nothing seems to be working out right now.

Here in Uganda, many people have managed to donate items in terms of food stuffs, sanitizers and even some companies have donated testing kits to help in the fight against Corona virus epidemic.

The most interesting bit of all these good humanitarian gesture has been the giving out of food, the posho and the beans.

The  distribution of the food has been a lot of drama than normal or necessary at this time of the crisis. There are some critical questions that are still lingering all over our heads about the way this food is being distributed.

One such question is, who is entittled to receiving this food and who is not entittled to receiving this food?

It has been said that the food shall only be served to people within Kampala city and also parts of Wakiso district, now since the Corona virus pandemic has covered the whole country, what happens to the people who live in other towns around the country?

How much of the food is supposed to be given to the people out there who are actually in need of the food.

What accountability is there for the items that have been received by the so called National Taskforce for the distribution of these items?

If these questions are answered properly, then the food distribution issue will not cause alot of politics within the food itself.
