WHY ARE UGANDAN POLITICIANS ENDING UP IN DEBT?

Recently the Ugandan media was filled up with news stories of one Ugandan politician and former Member of Parliament who is called  Abdu Katinti who had contested in the Kyadondo East constituency as the representative but lost the elections to Ugandan musician and politician Hon. Kyagulanyi Sentamu who is popularly known as Bobiwine.

This member of parliament had piled up alot of debt or borrowed money so that he could be able to convince people of his constituency to vote for him but unfortunately he lost the elections and failed to pay up the debts.

Abdu Katinti was arrested for failure to pay up what he owed and is to be taken to prison to serve a six months sentence at the Luzira Maximum prison.

One would ask, how can a honorable member of parliament do that to himself?

That is the reality in Uganda today, politics has become the order of the day and it has become a do or die affair in a way that most people have taken up politics as a job and not a service to the citizens of Uganda.

Most of these people who are contesting for various posts in parliament and many other positions are doing so just to improve their living standards and not the people that they are representing and supposed to serve.

Some politicians have borrowed money from banks and others have sold their houses just to make sure that they increase their chances of coming into the parliament of Uganda, why are we doing this to ourselves?

Why should a humanbeing sell off his or her belongings with the hope of ending up a honourable Member of Parliament.

It is very embarrassing to see a Member of Parliament ending up in debt and finally in prison.

In my own opinion, politics should not be a do or die affair where one will sacrifice his dignity just so that they can be able to get to power.

You can be able to live a very comfortable life and also be able to serve people without stepping your foot into parliament.
