BIOGRAPHY: INSPIRING STORY OF BETTY AOL OCHAN


Betty Aol Ochan who is also Known as Betty Ocan is a Ugandan politician and also educator  who is currently the leader of Opposition in the Ugandan parliament  after being appointed to that position on the 3rd of August 2018 by the current president of the  Forum for Democratic Change(FDC)  Engineer Patrick Amuriat Oboi.

 Betty Aol Ochan was born in the month of November on the 28th in the year 1958 and that makes her to be  60 years of age as of the year 2019.

After completing her secondary school education, Betty Ochan joined Makerere University where she pursued a Diploma in Education and in the 1981 she graduated from Makerere University.

After graduating from Makerere University, Betty Ochan joined the teaching profession and started teaching secondary school students at Layibi College  which is found in the northern part of Uganda.

She  was a secondary school teacher at Layibi College from the year 1981 up to the year 1985.

After her teaching stint at Layibi College, she was transfered to another secondary school called Amere Secondary school.

 In the year 1990, Betty Aol Ochan left the teaching profession to seek employment in a non-profit organisation called ACORD, that was based in the neighbouring country called Kenya. 

She worked at the offices of ACORD which is located in Gulu district.

While there she served as the Rural development worker up to the year 1995. Betty Ochan was later appointed as the program officer at  Saint Muritz Catholic Parish where she worked for  about two years.

In 1997, Betty Aol Ochan became a member of the Gulu district Council where she was very active and outspoken about issues in Gulu district.

 In 2006, Betty Ochan was elected into the parliament of Uganda as  the member of parliament for Gulu municipality  a position that she has held since up to today on the FDC political party ticket.

 In the same year, Betty Ochan  graduated from Gulu University with a Bachelors degree in Development studies and later enrolled for  a Masters degree in Development studies at Uganda Martyrs University and she completed the degree in the year 2013.

 She has also acquired many other certificates in different fields like rural development, leadership and social work.

 She is a great inspiration to all the women and girls out there who are planning to join the world of politics and leadership.
