In the modern world today, it is very difficult to find a homestead in Uganda that does not actually use electricity and does not have any use for electricity in their daily lives.

You might be having a house that is not fully connected to electricity but you will still have someone at that home who does have an electronics device like a phone that does use electricity top up its battery.

Today, I would like to look at how you can be able to get connected to electricity for free from UMEME without paying any coin or shilling.

If you are to get the connection to the national grid in the old way, you will spend lots of money since the bills for connecting to the national grid are still very high and according to the Uganda electricity regulatory authority, there is nothing that is going to change anytime soon.

Today I will give you some of the steps that you can follow to enable you to easily connect your home to electricity without any expenses.

According to the statistics from the Ministry of Energy, the access to electricity in Uganda stands at 20%. This means that 80% of Ugandans still do not have access to electricity on their own.

The main reason why many Ugandans are not connected to electricity is simply because of the high connection fees that are required to be paid before the connection to the national grid can be done by UMEME.

But if you want to be connected to the national grid easily, you must be living in a place where your village or area of residence is already connected, meaning that your neighbours are already using electricity and your home should be 60 meters from their connection pole.

This has become possible through a project that is being run by the Ugandan government which is called Electricity connection policy which is abbreviated as ECP. Electricity connection policy is  a project  that is being run by the Rural Electrification Agency  whose aim is to ensure that all Ugandans are able to have access to electricity.

This project is being funded by donors like the African Development Bank, French development and the European Union among other stakeholders.

Ugandans whose houses are located within the vicinity of sixty meters from the poles of connection will qualify to be connected provided their houses have been wired by electricians who were certified by Electricity Regulatory Authority.

Here are the requirements that you will need to have in order to be able to be connected by UMEME to the national grid so that you can save some of the costs involved:-

-Inspection costs

Other costs like buying the pole, labour costs will not be counted and you will save money on that but you will need to pay the costs for inspecting the work and this is called inspection fees.  This will cost you only 20,000 shillings.

-Wiring certificate, passport photo and proof of ownership

Other things that you will need to have are wiring certificate to show that you used a certified electrician, passport photo and the proof of ownership of the building to which the electricity will be connected.

If you can have all these requirements, you will be able to save yourself from paying about 360,000 shillings in connection fees if you had carried out a standard type of connection.
