Iam a proud
Ugandan and having been born in this country, I do not know which other place I
would have loved more other than this country which was called the Pearl of
Africa by the famous Winston Churchill.
This country I know has it’s bad side
like the politics of torture and also other nasty things that have happened in
it like the Bududa landslides that ravaged very many families that have been
residing on the slopes of Mount Elgon.
But besides all the comedy politics that does take place in Uganda,
there are some lovely reasons why I fell in love with this country.
Today, I
reveal to you some of the top reasons why I do love this country called Uganda
inspite of the problems that are within it.
1. Weather
This country
has one of the best weather patterns in the world and this has been admired by
the very many foreigners that have come into this country.
In Uganda, it will rain right now and after a
few minutes, you will see the sun coming out and warming up the place.
Everything will come to normal as if nothing actually ever happened. There is nothing like winter or snow that
will keep you stuck in your house for a whole day.
This weather has also made it very possible
for the agricultural sector in this country to thrive and anyone serious about
agriculture cannot actually go wrong with it.
This weather is fantastic.
2. Boda Bodas and Taxis
Travelling
within Ugandan towns and city has become very easy with the mode of transport
that has been adopted by this country.
The motorcycles or bikes which are
commonly known as boda bodas will help you navigate through the traffic easily
and your travel will not be delayed by traffic.
The most interesting thing is that you will be able to find these modes
of transport in almost every location.
Now with the arrival of transportation technologies like Safeboda, you
will be able to easily order for rides at the comfort of your homes.
The likes
of Uber, Safeboda, and others are making it very easy for people to travel
around within Uganda. That’s a plus to
enjoy this country.
3. Foods
When you
visit Uganda for the first time, you will be able to come into contact with
different kinds of foods that are available for you to eat.
Moving around different parts of this lovely
country will shock you in terms of the foods that you will be able to come into
contact with.
If you are to travel to the eastern part of Uganda, you will be
able to find a certain kind of staple food called Malewa which is eaten by a
certain tribal group found in Eastern Uganda called the Bagishu.
While you are in the Central region of
Uganda, you will be able to taste Matooke which is a certain kind of plantain
that can be mashed and eaten as bread or just prepared with groundnuts and
enjoyed.
You will also be able to enjoy
some luwombo which is one of the traditional meals that are prepared in the
Central part of Uganda for the special guests that arrive in homes or at
specific functions like traditional marriage ceremonies and others.
When you
get the chance to move to the western part of this country, you should not miss
out on the opportunity to taste eshabwe and also some bushera which is a local
brew that is prepared using millet flour.
In the northern part of this country,
you will be able to taste some millet bread which is called Kalo and atapa in
eastern Uganda by the tribal group called the Itesots.
These are some good
cuisine experiences that you can experience when you do come and visit this
lovely country called Uganda.
If you love food, this is one thing you should
indulge in while in Uganda.
4. Ethnic diversity
The numerous
number of people from different tribal groups living in the same community
makes this country very interesting to live in.
In Uganda we do have over 40 tribal groups and all these people are
living in harmony and existing together makes this place a very amazing and
lovely place to be in.
If you are a lover of the human diversity, you will
enjoy talking to people of different tribal groups and you will also be able to
learn some new things from these people.
Uganda is a place where you will
people speaking different languages all in one place.
If you happen to go to a
town around Uganda, you will find out that there are people of different ethnic
backgrounds and also tribal groups that are speaking different languages.
You
will be able to learn from all these people.
5. Cultural diversity
Uganda is a
country that is rich in culture and as a result of the many tribal groupings
that reside within it. Every tribal group has its own cultures that they are
proud to embrace.
When you come to the central part of Uganda, you will be able
to enjoy the rich Buganda culture that exists among the Baganda people.
From
the way they carry out their wedding ceremonies and also the way they do give
respect to their kings that are called Kabaka will take you out of this world.
When you move to the Eastern part of Uganda, specifically to the slopes of
Mount Elgon there you will find Bagishu people who do have a unique culture
that involves the practice of circumcision and they popularly call it Imbalu.
If you are able to arrive into that place during the period of circumcision,
you will be able to enjoy the cultural event that involves performing cultural
dances and also the process of circumcision taking place.
6. Tourist destinations
Uganda being
the pearl of Africa, it has very many places where you can go for your tourism
activities.
When you are in Uganda, there are very many places that you can go
and visit.
You can go gorilla trekking in the western part of Uganda around the
slopes of Mount Rwenzori or you can also go bird watching.
Uganda is one of the
destinations with the highest number of bird species in the world.
If you love
nature, Uganda is one place that you should not miss out on visiting. You will
enjoy the natural experience of being in the forest and enjoy the sounds that
are made by the different species of birds.
You should not also miss out on
seeing Zebras, lions and also giraffes at the Kidepo valley national park that
is in the North eastern part of this lovely country called Uganda.
7. Power cuts can make you go crazy
Uganda being
a third world country, we still do experience a lot of load shedding and the
funny thing is that sometimes you will spend some nights in real darkness.
Yes, with darkness you will be able to enjoy
the candle lights and the romantic feeling that truly does come with it.
8. The political drama
The Ugandan
politics is truly a beehive of comedy performances.
From pigs being dumped at
the parliamentary buildings to wearing black on what was popularly known as
black Monday, it just makes you break your ribs and it is not ending very soon.
That’s how we in Uganda do know to do politics.
The bad side of our politics is
the teargas and the bullets. But otherwise all this could win an Oscar for the
country.
9. Ugandan music with its lovely
melodies
The Ugandan
music industry has been growing for over a decade now and some of the popular
artists have become stars of sorts in their own country.
The tunes are lovely
and surprisingly some of these music artists have been able to win awards of
recognition outside Uganda.
People like Eddy Kenzo have achieved tremendous
success around the world due to their good music.
I love listening to Ugandan
musical sounds. Just sit down and enjoy them you will love them.
10. Social media tax
Surely the
digital landscape in Uganda is growing very fast and this has even forced the
Ugandan government to try some techniques in extracting some money from the
social media users by introducing a new tax called the social media tax.
It is
only in Uganda where you will find the likes of Facebook, twitter and whatsapp
being blocked and only allowed to be accessed after the payment of a certain
amount of money.
It’s very funny and annoying. This is Uganda friends.
11. Mobile Money tax
After seeing
the number of Mobile money users increase, the Ugandan government also decided
to introduce the mobile money tax so that they could collect some tax.
It
caused a lot of uproar among the users and it led to some government officials
trying to clarify on what they had done until it was amended.
The whereabouts of all this money is unknown
and the use cannot even be seen by the average Ugandan, that’s the sad bad.
All
this is comedy and it can sometimes get you feeling like a human being with no
brains. That’s Uganda for you.
