The political landscape of Uganda is heating up as new forces of change
continue to emerge in the political atmosphere of the pearl of Africa.
We have
seen the wave of people power sweep off some votes and even constituencies of
Uganda’s biggest political parties like National Resistance Movement and the
Forum for Democratic Change.
When Ugandan music artist and politician Robert
Kyagulanyi decided to offer himself for service in the Ugandan parliament as the
member of Parliament of the Kyadondo East Constituency, very many people looked
at him as something usual and they thought he would lose the elections but he
beat his opponents with a very large margin when the results of the elections
were announced.
He finally joined the likes of music artist Judith Barbirye and
also dramatist Kato Lubwama into the parliament of Uganda.
Since then he has
been moving around sweeping votes of both the ruling political party National
Resistance Movement and also the other opposition parties.
This is evident in
Busoga region where he led to the winning of Asuman Basalirwa who is currently
a Member of Parliament after being backed by Robert Kyagulanyi. After helping
Asuman Basalirwa gather enough support, he then went to Arua district where he
helped Kasiano Wadri to consolidate his support and win the elections that were
organised to select a successor for the fallen Arua Municipality Member of
Parliament Ibrahim Abiriga.
The way the ruling government reacted to the loss
was actually unnecessary and the reaction that it gained around the world put
the NRM government in panic and they were forced to start organising press
conferences and it even forced the Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to
start bribing youths by throwing large amounts of money around like he was a
mad person.
Now another new thing is
emerging into Uganda’s political scene and this is called the New formation
which is breaking out of Uganda’s biggest opposition party called Forum for
Democratic Change commonly known as FDC.
After falling out with his colleagues
over the Presidential elections that were carried out within the party.
Mugisha Muntu had to move on start a
fresh.
Dr. Kizza Besigye and Gen.
Mugisha Muntu had disagreed on the strategies that they would actually use so
that they can easily take over power from the ruling party, National Resistance
Movement.
Dr. Kizza Besigye was proposing the deviance strategy while Gen.
Mugisha Muntu felt building the party structures was actually more important to
him.
Over the years, the two leaders
have been moving back and forth over the same issue. While in the party, Gen.
Mugisha Muntu was working on building the structures of the FDC party
especially in the grassroots while Dr. Kizza Besigye was busy organising the
deviance campaigns around Kampala and also having some running battles with the
Ugandan police, occasionally he would get arrested.
After losing the post of the President of the
FDC party, Gen. Mugisha Muntu decided to move on and launch the new formation.
He also carried with him some people who did not believe in the ideologies of
the Forum for Democratic Change leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.
Among some of these
people who decided to defect from the mother party are people like Kassiano
Wadri who actually decided to contest as an independent candidate in the Arua
elections.
He has also been followed many other people from the Forum for
Democratic Change. According to reports so far, over 60 members of Forum for
Democratic Change have decided to join the New formation of Gen. Mugisha Muntu.
According to Gen. Mugisha Muntu, the New formation will be a gift for Ugandans
on Christmas.
He said that by December 25th 2018, the party will
have been unveiled and that their mission is to build from the grassroots.
With the storms that are sweeping over the
FDC party the fundamental question that very many people will be asking is will
Uganda’s biggest opposition political party survive the storm?
We shall find
that out when the new formation starts operating fully in Uganda’s political
atmosphere.
