Ugandans have been enjoying the social media platforms and having a
blast on them but as it always does, our government which is led by President
Yoweri Museveni jumped into the mix and decided to introduce the dreadful
social media tax so that they could avoid people gossiping or talking ill about
the NRM government.

What later happened
was that they decided to slap a daily tax on the social media users of 200
Ugandan shillings.
At first most Ugandans thought the president was joking but
it his words became true on 29th of June 2018.
From that day it
became impossible to access the social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp or even Snapchat without paying the tax unless if you plan to
go the hacker way and use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to help you access
social media.
For those out there who are still stuck with how to pay the OTT
tax , here is a simple tutorial that will help you pay the tax and be able to
enjoy the social media services without any interruption.

The first thing to note is that
the social media tax (OTT tax) is paid through only the mobile money services
and nothing else.
Now here are
the steps that will help you in paying your social media tax.
1. If you are on MTN network, you should
dial *165*2*8 # and for Airtel network
users you can dial *185*2*5#. While for the Africell Users you dial *144*2*5#.

2. Follow the prompts and select the option that
best suits you as you can see in the screenshot below.

3. You should
now choose the bundle that you want to pay for whether it is daily, weekly or monthly.
For now the users are unable to pay for the yearly bundle since the option is
not yet provided.

4. You can now
confirm your transaction. But if you
want to get back to the earlier step you should press 0 (zero).

5. A message
will now be sent to your phone confirming that you have now paid your social
media tax. You can now enjoy the social media platforms. Thank You.
