In January 1922, the humble institution began operating under name called Uganda Technical College and it started with only 14 students who were studying as day students.

The students were doing courses in Carpentry, Mechanics and Building construction. As the years went on the College began offering courses in other disciplines like Medicine, Agriculture, Veterinary sciences and even teacher training studies.

In 1935, Uganda Technical College was placed as the Center for Higher Education in East Africa.

In 1937, the institution began it’s journey of becoming a higher institution of learning by beginning to offer some certificate courses and in 1949, Uganda Technical College became a University college that was affiliated to the University College of London whereby it was offering some courses which actually led to the award of the degrees of the University college of London.

On 29th June 1963, University of East Africa was established and the partnership between University College of London and Uganda Technical College ended and the University of East Africa started awarding it’s own degrees.

Makerere University then became an independent University which was the first national University in the Republic of Uganda on 1st July 1970. Makerere University started offering Post graduate and undergraduate degrees that were leading to the award of it’s own degrees.

Today the University has a student population of over 35,000 who are under graduates and also some other 3000 post graduate students. Makerere University has become a very active center for carrying out research.

Recently, Makerere University shifted from the Faculty based system to a college system in December 2011 and it has 9 constituent colleges and now it has added on the School of Law as one of it’s colleges making it 10 constituent colleges.
