Slyvia Awori is a Ugandan female entrepreneur, fashion designer who is
currently the chairperson and chief executive officer of a company called the
Zipa Modelling agency. She is founder of the company which responsible for most
of her fortune.
Sylvia Awori was born in Uganda during the regime of the former
Ugandan president Idi Amin and that was in 1976.
Slyvia Awori was born in a
family of seven children. She went to Nsambya secondary school found in Kampala
which is the capital city of Uganda.
After completing her secondary school
education, she joined Newham College in London where she obtained a degree of
Bachelor of Arts in Fashion and design.
After completing her studies in the
United Kingdom, Slyvia Awori returned to Uganda and decided to open a boutique
that started selling imported clothes.
The boutique is located at Garden City
Mall and also another boutique is found at Mabirizi complex and she also
managed to open up another boutique in Nairobi in a place called Kilimani which
was employing around 80 people by 2009.
Slyvia Awori started manufacturing and
making her own clothes. In 2000, Slyvia Awori was chosen by the organisers of
the MNET Face of Africa to design the costumes that were going to be worn by
the contestants in Dar es Salaam and Cape Town.
In 2001, Sylvia Awori was also
selected to design the clothes that were to be worn by the finalists at the
Nokia Face of Africa competition.
In 2001, Slyvia Awori started organising the
Miss Uganda beauty Pageant hence this expanded her visibility.
In 2004, Slyvia
Awori decided to launch her own clothing line which she called Slyvia Awori
label.
In 2005, Slyvia Awori decided to venture into the publishing business by
launching her own magazine called the African Woman Magazine.
The Magazine was
produced monthly and it circulated in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda,
and including South Sudan.
Slyvia Awori was responsible for designing and also
manufacturing the costumes that were used in the movie The Last King of
Scotland whose lead actor was Forest Whitaker who was portraying Idi Amin.
The
movie was released in 2006. Sylvia Awori is a mother with two children and one
of them was fathered by the former mayor of Kampala Alhajji Nasser Ntege
Sebaggala.
