Matia Kasaija is a Ugandan politician and public administrator who is
currently the Minister of Finance in the Ugandan cabinet.
He came into that
position as a replacement for Maria Kiwanuka who was appointed as the Senior
Presidential advisor after a cabinet reshuffle that took place. Matia Kasaija
was born on 28th May 1944 in Kibaale district. Matia Kasaija went to
the University of Nairobi where he was pursuing a Bachelor of commerce degree.
During that time the University of Nairobi was part of the University of East
Africa. Matia Kasaija completed his degree in 1967.
Matia Kasaija contested in
the 180 elections that took place in Uganda and he was elected to the
parliament of Uganda.
In 1981, he was appointed as the State Minister for
Labour between 1981 and 1988.
He also worked as the executive director of the
departed Asian custodian board which was a body whose role was to safeguard the
properties of the expatriated Asians who were expelled from Uganda by the then
president Idi Amin in 1970s.
He also became the deputy director of Mass
mobilisation at the National Resistance Movement Secretariat.
In 2006, Matia
Kasaija was appointed as the minister for internal affairs. In 2011, he was
re-elected into the parliamentary seat and became the state Minister for
planning.
