Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged the minister for
Energy Engineer Irene Muloni not to sign another agreement permitting UMEME to
operate in Uganda again.
In a letter written to the minister by the president,
Museveni cites the high power charges that the South African company levies on
the consumers as one sole reason why the contract should not be renewed or
lincenses even renewed.
UMEME Limited is Uganda’s main power distribution company having
acquired the mandate to supply power since 2005 for 20 years up to 2025.
According to the president the agreement was messed up by certain elements in
the Energy ministry and this has led to
the high prices and he said that the cheating started with the inflation of
certain technical and commercial losses.
But According to UMEME officials, the
company is committed to working with the government of Uganda and it’s key
stakeholders.
