WHO IS WINNIE KIZZA?
Winfred Kizza is a Ugandan female
politician and teacher by profession.
She is the current leader of the
opposition in parliament since the year 2016 and has been the member of the
Forum for Democratic Change even before she became a member of parliament.
She
is currently the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Kasese district women
in the 10th parliament. Winnie Kizza was born in Kasese district on
26th November 1972 in a village called Nsenyi Village which is found
in Kisinga sub-county.
Winnie Kizza was born in a politically active family
where her mother who was called Modesty Muke was a supporter of the Uganda
people’s congress (UPC) political party while her father who was called Kanyere
Constance Muke joined the Democratic Party which is commonly abbreviated as DP.
Winnie Kizza lost her father at a tender age of 10 and she along with her
siblings were looked after by her mother who did not have a specific job to her
name.
Winnie Kizza had her elementary school education at three different
schools namely,Nsenyi primary school,
Kisinga primary school and Kajwenga
primary school.
After completing her primary school education, Winnie Kizza
went to Saadi Memorial Secondary school and finally completed her Advanced level
of education at Saint.
Maria Goretti School which is found in Fortportal
district that is found in the western part of Uganda. After completing her high
school education, Winnie Kizza joined National College of Business Studies
(NCBS) that was before it came to be called Makerere University Business
School, Nakawa.
During her ordinary level of education vacation, she started
teaching in her alma mater, Kisinga primary school during the vacation of S.4
and also taught after completing her Advanced level of education, she started
teaching at St. Maria Gorretti School.
During the time when Bwera General Hospital
was being constructed by the government of Uganda, Winnie Kizza worked for one
of the contractors in the stores department. After that she worked for a tour
guide company that was located at the Queen Elizabeth
National Park. In the year 1996, Winnie Kizza decided to join full time
politics.
Between the year 1996 to 2001 she served on the Kasese district local council where she was District secretary for finance. In the year
2001, Winnie Kizza was again elected to the local district council where she
served as secretary for Education and
secretary for Social services.
In the year 2006, she contested for the
Kasese Women’s parliamentary seat on opposition party, Forum for Democratic
Change party ticket. She won the seat and was re-elected to the same post again
in 2011 and also 2016.
In the year 2016, Winnie Kizza who was 44 years old at
the time was appointed the Leader of Opposition party in the parliament of
Uganda and this made her the first woman in the history of Uganda to take up
that position in parliament.
Winnie Kizza is an inspiration to many Ugandan
women and girls out there. She has been so vocal against the passing of the age
limit bill that grants President Museveni the chance to run again for the
presidential seat in Uganda.
