THE INSPIRING STORY OF
JOSE CHAMELEON
Joseph Mayanja commonly known as Jose chameleon is a Ugandan
music artist, singer. Jose chameleon started singing in the late 90s.
He had his education at primary and secondary
school level and after that he decided to concentrate on music.
In those early
years of his music career, Chameleon with the likes of Bebecool used to take a
bus up to Nairobi in Kenya where they would go to record songs with the Ogopa
Djs who were the popular music group from Kenya.
Jose chameleon once confessed
having used his tuition to transport himself to Nairobi and record his first
set of songs. His song Mama Mia brought him into the music scene in both Uganda
and the East African countries.
During the early 90s and the early 2000s, the
Congolese music ruled East Africa. Jose chameleon, Bebecool and the likes of
Bobiwine saw an opportunity to venture into music.
During those days, music was
not paying the bills for these stars but the passion they had for music pushed
them to continue recording songs. Due to their persistence and consistency,
they were accepted by the Ugandans and the East African audience at large.
Jose
chameleon has recorded songs like Mama Mia, Dorotia, and more other hits. Jose
chameleon has been nominated in so many wards and these included Kora awards, Mama
Awards, locally Hipipo awards, Pam awards and many others.
He later formed a
music crew that was called Leon Island from where he recruited young talents
with whom they worked together.
Among
these artists are Radio and Weasel, who have since moved on and formed the Good
life crew from where they have been producing hit after hit.
In 2006, Jose
chameleon recorded a song called Bomboclat that he is said to have stolen from
professor jay’s album. The beats of the song sounded similar to the version of
professor jay from Tanzania.
Professor Jay threatened to sue Jose chameleon for
copyright infringement but they sorted out their issues amicably.
In 2007, Jose
chameleon got married to a woman called Dorothy from the UK. This relationship did not last after Dorothy
was arrested for drug trafficking and sent to jail. Jose chameleon and Dorothy had a son.
Jose
chameleon later found new love in a Ugandan girl with whom they are still
married. There were once rumours that this woman briefly left chameleon after he
was rumoured to have converted to Islam.
This led to the close family members
of Jose chameleon organising a meeting to talk to the music star so that sanity
can reign in their home.
Jose Chameleon continues to inspire youths in Uganda
to join the music industry. He is a true legend of the Ugandan music industry.
