STATE OF THE NATION: HIS EXCELLENCY HON. BOBIWINE

UGANDANS ON MUSIC ARTISTS AND THE CHANGING POLITICAL LANDSCAPE

There is new wave of populism sweeping across the world not only in the United States where the unpopular president Donald Trump ascended into power on January 20 this year but also in Uganda. In the last few weeks we witnessed a shocking and unbelievable landslide victory of Kyagulanyi Sentamu popularly known as Bobiwine.

Somebody would ask how this music artist managed to beat all those we thought were better qualified to represent the people of Kyadondo in parliament.

In my own opinion, the political landscape is slowly but surely changing and all those political leaders who thought they could deceive their electorates and get away with it, it is time you better watch out and start doing what actually took you to Parliament otherwise, the changing waves of politics will surely sweep you away.

As the electorates were busy casting their  votes on that fateful Thursday morning, I  was privileged to get a chance to watch one particular candidate with names withheld on request  say that he is going to invite Bobiwine to his victory party to sing and entertain the crowd the following day  but as I write this article  the candidate has stopped calling his Excellency Hon. Bobiwine and before even he can call him, he actually didn’t appear at the premises of the tally centre while the vote counting was being done, how the world can change and become too small for some people only God knows.

Many politicians in this country have bribed voters and rigged elections and entered the Parliamentary buildings without thinking about the electorates but I think this new wave will change things for the better.

The people who voted Hon. Bobiwine were not the ones who dressed in suits or the ones that drive Range rovers on the streets of Kampala.

These were people who make chapattis on the streets, the taxi touts, the bodaboda riders who are being told to vacate the city centre, the street vendors who are being beaten up the KCCA people.

These people made it clear that it is time up and they did not want any bribing or ballot stuffing, they said the time is up and they want change in their constituencies.

They were tired of people who bribe them to vote for them and later they do not deliver, in simple terms  they wanted someone that they could trust and so they entrusted their hopes on Kyagulanyi Bobiwine.
