HOW TO USE AI FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

 By Matata Mercy

In this digital age, where artificial intelligence is becoming a common phenomenon, I have critically thought about how this new technology can be used to manage waste in our cities and homes.

After suffering with the pain of managing my own waste at home, like sorting plastics, paper and other forms of waste.

I thought deeply about how we could manage waste, the act of picking up stuff that are no longer useful to us like paper, plastics and then dropping them into containers was very hectic and also time consuming especially if heaps and heaps of this litter have been harboured somewhere in our living spaces.

Then an idea came to me, can I say a eureka moment, I asked myself how can this new technology called AI help us in this hard task of collecting and also managing our waste.

After doing some research, I came up with a few ideas.

Today I will share with you a few tips on how artificial intelligence can be used to manage waste.

1. Smart sorting of waste.

Artificial intelligence technology can help us to easily sort waste and organize it properly.

Robots can be used to help in sorting of waste like paper, plastics, metal, organic and other forms of waste that can be put in the right dustbins.

Robots can do this using computer vision and sensors that are powered by artificial intelligence.

Machine learning algorithms can also be employed to help improve sorting accuracy with time.

2.Predictive waste management.

AI can help in data analysis like the history of waste generation, population density and also weather patterns.

This data can be used to predict when and where the dustbins will be filling up, optimizing the collection routes, reducing fuel use and also the cost of labour.

3.Smart bins using AI.

Smart bins that use AI can be deployed in our living spaces or cities and these bins can be able to analyze what is being thrown away, provide real-time feedback like alerting users when the bins are misplaced and also the notification of the collectors when they are full.

4.Quality control at recycling plants.

In the recycling plants, AI can identify items that cannot be recycled or are contaminated in the conveyer belts and this helps in keeping the recycling purity, also reduce waste rejection.

5. Image recognition for detecting litter.

Drones can be used to help in detecting litter or illegal dumping in public areas, parks, or road sides.

This can help the cleaning crews to swing into action or even issue fines for illegal dumping.

These are some AI ideas that I thought can be implemented to help in managing waste.

Hopefully, someone out there could take up these ideas and implement them as a project or even a startup idea.

Good Luck 👍👍🚀🚀🛅
