A few weeks back, I was talking to a friend of mine about how we are spending our hard earned money on the things that we do not actually need.
During our conversations, I realized that there are some reasons why we are shopping aggressively each and everyday.
This shopaholic habit has led some of us deep into debt, making us unhappy and also depressed.
So here are the things that we think shopping can give us but it can never do.
1.Contentment.
We are always searching for contentment and therefore we keep spending money that we don't have on things that we think will give us comfort.
We believe that a Rangerover will give us comfort more than a Toyota that we already have in our garage.
After having the Rangerover for a few months, our human minds will make us believe that this car that we thought was the car of our dreams is nolonger cool.
We start wondering how it actually feels to be seated in a Tesla car.
This mind of ours makes us believe that this Tesla car is worth the amount of time that we have spent working our ass off on the jobs that we hardly like.
Our tastes do not stop there and the cycle goes on and on.
As a result we keep spending more and more on the things that we believe will give us contentment but actually none of that happens.
We were born content even in an empty room.
2. Happiness
All humanbeings are looking for one thing that they value most and that is happiness.
We think that spending more money will make us happy.
Our thoughts as humans run like this: If I can just have the latest iphone in my hands, i will be happy but as soon as we get our hands onto this magnificent iPhone, our desires change and what we thought would give us happiness doesn't.
We now desire something else, another phone better than the iPhone.
From my own perspective, we are looking for happiness in the wrong places.
The things we buy will not give us happiness.
Our new iPhone will become old and be broken, latest car will one day become vintage and unfashionable.
We are looking for happiness in the wrong places.
Happiness cannot be shopped or bought from a supermarket but we were designed to be happy even without a thing.
3.Self-esteem.
We are meant to think by advertisers that we can buy our self esteem through new clothes.
The latest fashion trend can give us our self-esteem and make us feel good about ourselves,so they tell us.
After spending loads of cash on shopping for new clothing, we soon discover we are behind the trendy fashion and have to buy some more clothes. And the cycle continues.
Truth be told, we have our self-esteem even when we are naked.
Shopping for things we need is good but chasing our wants aimlessly will put us in unnecessary debts.
Good luck.
