It takes alot of courage, dedication and persistance to ensure that kids succeed in life and become what they ought to be and achiev beyond their wildest dreams.
Raising a kid who later becomes a billionaire is still a mystery and there are no how tos for that and i do believe if those how tos did exist, each and everyone on the planet would be looking for it like hot cake.
Today i would like to share with you some of the wisdom that the parents of Bill Gates shared that unique style of parenting that later made him become a billionaire.
1. They granted him freedom and independence
The parents of Bill Gates who are William Senior and his late wife who was called Mary did not limit his independence but instead gave him the freedom and actually alot of freedom so that he could be able to do what he actually wanted to do.
When he was just thirteen years old, Bill Gates would spend alot of time away from home and sometimes he would even spend the night at the University of Washington while using computers.
Although Bill Gates had a disruptive attitude and it is said that one time his mother had trouble getting to dinner saying that he told her that he was thinking when he was asked what he actually was doing at the time.
His parents took him to psychologist who later convinced him not to try to challenge his parents and from there on Bill understood it since his prents were actually very supportive of his efforts.
2. They allowed him to do the things that he was not good at doing
The truth is that Bill Gates was very good at doing so many things but his parents always continued to push him to do the things that he was not actually very good at like swimming, football and even soccer.
They also put efforts in encouraging him to get involved in music lessons where he was engaged in playing the trombone but did not have much success at it.
It might not be a very good idea for most parents to push their kids to do the things that they are actually not very good at since it can have some effect on their self-esteem, the parents of Bill Gates looked at it as an opportunity to build a growth mindset within him.
Trying new things also allowed their son to learn the importance of failure.
According to Bill Gates, he didnot know why they did it that way at the time but later on he learnt that he was not good at everything and that instead of sticking with things that he was comfortable with and that all this exposed him to leadership opportunities out there.
3. They were not forcing him to actually meet their expectations
Bill Gates parents didnot have any intention of forcing him to actually meet their expectations.
For most parents out there who have their kids at College, they would love to see their kids graduate and also get the degrees but his parents didnot force him to do that.
They did not expect their son to become a billionaire but they had ordinary expectations of him just like everyone else does have like graduate and get a degree.
But when Bill Gates told them that he was planning to drop out of Havard, it was a tough decision for them to make but they eventually accepted his decision .
His father said that he was not a factor in decision making for his son since his son had his own ideas on how he actually wanted to achieve his goals and that he actually looked like he knew what he was doing at the time.
After dropping out, Bill Gates moved with his friend Paul Allen to start Microsoft.
4. They instilled in him the importance of community
The parents of Bill Gates were so much involved philanthropy and also community work.
While doing all this, Bill Gates was always with them and he learnt alot from them about helping people for the good of the world.
His mother always believed that to whom much is given, much is expected from. Gates senior said that she instilled an important value in his son that he has grown up with and has actively done.
