The dish that am going to teach you today is very popular in Kenya and it's aroma is very enticing and also delicious.
Most of the pilaus have the same method that is used to prepare them and so once you have been able to perfectly cook one, then the others will be a walk over.
Ingredients that you need
- 2 table spoons of Cooking Oil.
- 300 grams of Beef cubes.
- 2 chopped medium sized Onions.
-2 Grated medium sized Carrots.
- 1 table spoon of Chilli Powder.
- 1 table spoon of Pilau Masala.
- 2 to 3 Bay leaves.
- 2 cups of hot water for cooking the beef.
- 2 cups of Dawati Basmati rice that is rinsed and soaked
- Salt.
-Freshly ground black pepper.
-1 bulb of Garlic, cut the top so that the cloves are exposed.
-1 table spoon of coriander powder.
- 3 cups of hot water.
- 3 cups of hot water for cooking the rice.
Procedure to be followed
1. Start by heating oil in a pot which is large enough and then add the beef into the oil in batches ensuring that you do not over crowd the pot.
You should make sure that you sear the beef so that it can be able to brown and not steam. Now, you should make sure that it cooks for about 3 to 4 minutes until it is browned on all sides.
2. Now add the onions to the oil and then stir them for 1 to 2 minutes.
3. You can now add the carrots which are seasoned salt and pepper, chilli powder, pilau masal, bay leaves and then stir. You should allow them to cook for about 1 to 2 minutes or until the carrots become soft.
4. Add the hot water to cook the beef and then you can cover the pot with a lid and let the beef simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour until the beef is very tender.
5. Start layering the rice onto the beef, add some more salt and then pour in some hot water to cook the rice and then let it simmer while uncovered for about 10 to 20 minutes.
6. Now start sprinkling coriander powder on the almost cooked rice and now you can push the bulb of garlic into the rice while ensuring that the exposed cloves have been submerged inside the rice.
7. Cover the pot with the lid and then reduce the temperature and then you can allow it to sit for about 12 to 15 minutes.
8. Lastly, remove the bulb of garlic and the bay leaves from the rice and then you serve the pilau immediately.
