Ruhakana Rugunda who is commonly known as Ndugu by his friends is a
Ugandan politician and medical doctor who is currently the Prime Minister of
the republic of Uganda and he rose to this position in 2014 after being appointed
by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Ruhakana Rugunda was born in Kabale
district which is found in the Western part of Uganda in 1947.
When he was
still young, Rugunda would sit next to his father who is called Surumani
Rugunda and read newspapers for him.
This early exposure to politics through
reading newspapers sparked interest in politics for Ruhakana Rugunda. Ruhakana
Rugunda had his secondary school education in Kigezi high school and Busoga
College Mwiri before joining Makerere University where he studied Medicine and
Surgery and after that he went to University of Zambia where he graduated with
Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery.
After completing his Bachelors degree he
joined the University of California, Berkeley where he got a Masters0f science
degree in public health.
During his time at Makerere University he was the
president of the National Union of Students of Uganda (NUSU) which was a
politically vibrant youth movement. During the time when he was a young
political activist, Ruhakana Ruganda joined the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC)
and he became very good friends with the then president Apollo Milton Obote.
In
1986 after president Yoweri Kaguta became the Ugandan president, Ruhakana
Rugunda was appointed in various Ministerial posts like the Minister of health,
Minister of Internal Affairs , Minister of Water and lands and also Minister of Information and Communication
technology.
He was in 2014 appointed as the prime minister by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
