BIOGRAPHY- THE INSPIRING STORY OF BETTY KAMYA

WHO IS  BETTY KAMYA?


Betty Olive Namisango Kamya Turomwe who is also known as Betty Kamya is a Ugandan politician and businesswoman.

Betty Kamya is the founder and president of the Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA) which is actually one of the registered political parties in Uganda. Betty Kamya is currently the Minister for Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) in the Ugandan cabinet. She was appointed to that position on 6th June 2016. 

Betty Kamya was born in Kenya in a place called Nakuru on 30th November 1955 and her father was called George Wilson Kamya who is a Ugandan by nationality and her mother is called Wairimu Margret Kamya who is a Kenyan by nationality.

Beti Kamya was born in a family of nine children and she was the fourth born. 

In the year 1961, at the time Beti Kamya was six years old her family moved to Uganda. BetiKamya went to McKay Memorial School in Kampala and St. Hellen’s primary school which is found in Western Uganda for her primary school education.

 After completing her primary school, she proceeded to Wanyange Girls’ school where she obtained Uganda certificate of Education which is commonly known as O-level education. 

Betty Kamya then joined Kings College Budo for her Advanced Level of Education commonly known as A-level education. 

She then joined Makerere University where she studied a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce specializing in Marketing. 

After graduation, Betty Kamya worked at Uganda Leather and Tanning Industries Limited which is found in Jinja district. She worked in the sales department and she worked in the company up to the year 1988. 

She then joined Nyanza Textiles Industries Limited where she worked as a sales executive until the year 1992. After 1992, she and her husband relocated to Kampala which is the largest city in Uganda. 

She worked with Uganda Batteries Limited as their marketing manager from the year 1996 to 1999. 

She became the executive director of the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) from 1999 to 2004 which is found in Entebbe that is located in the southern part of Kampala. 

Betty Kamya joined the Reform Agenda pressure group which later became the Forum for Democratic Change party while she was still serving as the executive director of the UWEC. 

Betty Kamya was then appointed as the special envoy of the Forum for Democratic Change President Dr. Kizza Besigye. Betty Kamya was also elected as a Member of Parliament for the Rubaga North constituency on the FDC ticket.

 Betty Kamya contested as president in the 2011 presidential elections where she was the fifth with around 52000 votes casted in her name. 

She once served as a Member of Parliament for the Rubaga North Constituency where she was contesting on the Forum for Democratic Change commonly known as FDC ticket this was between 2006 up to 2010.  

In the year 2010, Betty Kamya quit the Forum for Democratic Change and formed her own party called Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA) and became it’s first president.
